[Spanish fishing boat at sea]
SAILOR: Ahora, capitan?
(The captain throws his empty plastic bottle into the sea.)
AGUSTIN: Vamos a subirla!
SAILORS: Si, senor. espacio. Despacio.
(They start to pull in the trawl net. There is a scream, then something is flailing in amongst the fish. Captain Agustin shoots it.)
[London - Pierre-Dupont flat]
(The phone wakes a man. 1:03, but it isn't his main phone, it is the one hidden in a drawer.)
BARCLAY: No way!
(He runs into another bedroom.)
BARCLAY: Kirby. Kirby, I'm so sorry, darling. You got to get up. I just got a phone call. I'm not supposed to tell you, but
there's this oil spill in Scotland. They need me. You've got to go to your mum's. I know. I know. I'm so sorry. Will you get up?
Will you get up, please? Love you, love you. Thank you. Thank you. I'll phone your mum.
[Underground Car Park]
BARCLAY: Hello.
CHAKRI: Why have they activated you?
BARCLAY: I don't know. Er, this is Kirby. They're my child. They're with me.
CHAKRI: But I'm in uniform.
BARCLAY: Yeah, we just got to drop 'em off at their mum's. It's in Fulham. It's on the way.
KIRBY: We can get a taxi in two minutes. I'm old enough. I'm not a kid.
BARCLAY: No, look, you're not crossing London on your own at this time of night and that's that. I'm sorry, this is just how it is. I'm sorry.
[Car]
KIRBY: So, why are you with soldiers?
BARCLAY: Er, well, because... sometimes with an oil spill, there might be, er... arguments.
(They go south over Westminster Bridge.)
[Outside Barbara's home]
BARCLAY: Thanks. Sorry about this.
BARBARA: Can't be helped, I suppose. You and that bloody job.
KIRBY: Sorry, Mum.
BARBARA: When are you back?
BARCLAY: Oh, I can't tell. I'll text you. Sorry to interrupt the party. Who's there? Clive and Kalisha?
BARBARA: Yeah. And Stanley.
BARCLAY: Yeah. Well, he would be, wouldn't he? See you.
[Car]
BARCLAY: Sorry. The ex is a bit cross with me.
CHAKRI: You've broken so many rules.
BARCLAY: I know. And I want to say, er... I am sorry about Christmas.
CHAKRI: If you can't drink, don't. I checked. Apparently, you're onboard to replace someone called Roger Trevithick. He's on a mission
in Scotland, so you've been made his replacement.
BARCLAY: Is that what it says?
CHAKRI: Yup.
[Airport]
BARCLAY: That thing about Roger Trevithick, did that come from HR?
CHAKRI: How should I know? General.
PIERCE: Sergeant Chakri, welcome aboard. And you are?
BARCLAY: Er... Oh, Barclay Pierre-Dupont, sir. I'm Roger Trevithick's replacement?
PIERCE: Oh, the civilian. Read and assess.
BARCLAY: I just wanted to say, about Roger Trevithick, did that come from HR...
PIERCE: Barclay Pierre-Dupont. Does that surname make you French?
BARCLAY: Er, yeah, on my father's side.
PIERCE: Tres bien.
BARCLAY: Oh, my God.
[Lear Jet]
PILOT [OC]: Confirm this flight is under UNIT...
MORGAN: Barclay.
BARCLAY: Oh. Hiya. Pip, innit?
MORGAN: Yeah.
BARCLAY: I'm replacing Roger Trevithick.
MORGAN: Oh, my God. Yeah.
PIERCE: Okay. We arrive on Cabrera at 09:00 local time. From there, we get taken to the island of Dragonera. The village is called
Cala Escondida, designated prime location. There's a lot to take in, so I suggest you make a start.
(Everyone logs into their UNIT PADDS, except Barclay who can't remember his password.)
MORGAN: Wow.
(He shows Barclay some footage on his PADD. They take off.)
MORGAN: Amazing, isn't it? Mind blown.
BARCLAY: The thing about Roger Trevithick... Look, I replaced him only one time, back in 2020. His wife was having a baby,
it was premature and he had to rush off, and I just happened to be there. So all I had to do was answer his phone, which didn't
even ring, and so that was that. But then I went on file as Roger Trevithick's replacement.
MORGAN: Ah. How is the baby?
BARCLAY: Yeah, the baby is fine. But the thing is, I... I just got stuck on the list in HR. Roger Trevithick's replacement.
I get, like, memos. I mean, there's one time I even got tickets to Japan, and I'd email them. I'd say, "Look. Look, I'm not
Roger Trevithick's replacement."
MORGAN: So?
BARCLAY: So I'm not Roger Trevithick's replacement! I'm grade ten.
MORGAN: Ten?! You're ten?!
BARCLAY: Look, I...
MORGAN: Don't talk to me! And I didn't show you anything.
BARCLAY: Yeah but what... what do I do? I work in transport. I just book the taxis!
[Helicopter]
PIERCE [OC]: All troops. As of now, the Mediterranean is hostile territory.
(The helicopter comes in to land in a small inlet.)
CHAKRI [OC]: Village evacuated. Border established at 10km, sir. This entire coastline belongs to us.
[Outside seaside villa]
PIERCE: They hung it far away from the village, like they were scared of it. Even in death.
[Villa]
COMPUTER: Decontamination in progress. Decontamination in progress. Decontamination in progress.
PIERCE: Colonel.
HASHIM: General. Quite a sight, isn't it? Caught five kilometres off the coast. They shot it dead, but then thought they could make money out of it.
Hauled it up. The monster from the deep. We saw it online. Declared it a hoax. Flew in from Madrid, sealed the place off, but it's quite a find.
It's the first time we've seen one exactly like this.
PIERCE: In mythology and superstition we call them sea devils, but we're better than that now. Let's say, er... Homo Aqua.
MIN TSO: We think their species branched off from temnospondyls, which means the correct name is Homospondyl Erectus.
PIERCE: I say Homo Aqua because that's what it looks like. Do we have a sex?
MIN TSO: Difficult to say. The genitalia suggests reptilian cloaca, which is found on both male and female.
PIERCE: What about the neck? Was there a pearl?
MIN TSO: Plain and simple. Nothing artificial. Calcium carbonate. Sixty percent aragonite, forty percent calcite.
PIERCE: Then I suggest we return it to its rightful place. Every time we find a creature like this, we find a pearl.
It might be simple decoration. Mankind has worn pearls ever since God knows when, but every pearl gets analysed and we've found nothing.
No technology, no inscription, but still, it doesn't signify a caste or belief or identity. The pearl is always located at the base of the throat,
actually embedded in the skin. We think it's placed there at birth.
CHAKRI: It goes back at least 2,000 years, sir, the use of pearls as jewellery. It's said Cleopatra removed her pearl earring,
dissolved it in vinegar and drank it in front of Mark Antony.
PIERCE: Could be useful. File that. Ready for the deep scan?
CHAKRI: Yes, sir.
MORGAN: Yes, sir.
PIERCE: Corporal Morgan, you can join the team here and liaise with Sergeant Brock. Thank you, Miss Tso. I think your team can stand down.
MIN TSO: Yes, sir. Pack it up!
(Barclay is left alone with the blue-skinned being hanging there, then crosses himself.)
[Clifftop]
PIERCE: Charge him up.
SOLDIER: Coffee, sir.
PIERCE: Thank you. Cheers. I just wonder what they're doing here. I mean, it's a pond, the Mediterranean. It's got no depth.
HASHIM: January 2020, there was an avalanche underwater, lasting two days, off the west coast of Africa, spreading over 1,200 kilometres.
Massive event. All hidden under the sea.
PIERCE: You think it was them?
HASHIM: It severed communications cables, which I think is significant.
PIERCE: You're waking up. Now, the world is two thirds water. It's us against them.
(A sonic wave goes out from the suitcase device they charged up.)
PIERCE: Well... I think they heard that.
BARCLAY: What was that, sir?
PIERCE: A translation pulse. We said hello.
(Barclay collects the suitcase.)
[Field tent]
(Barclay has to bunk with the troops.)
BARCLAY: Can we use our phones yet?
CHAKRI: No.
[Villa]
MORGAN: No, no, no. It's a true story! That's why people die. Most common domestic accident, they fall down stairs, break their necks.
ABDALLA: So what are you supposed to do?
MORGAN: Well, you go like this. As you fall, you starfish, yeah? It jams you into the stairwell, you stop falling.
ABDALLA: But who is going to remember that? You're falling! You don't think, "What do I do? What kind of fish?"
(He goes to have a slash against the wall.)
MORGAN: That's the point. No one remembers, so you die!
(00:45 Barclay has three texts from Barbara. Need to talk Kirbys school phone me. Call me. Your jobs not this important CALL ME)
MORGAN: Anyway. Right, do you take sugar?
ABDALLA: No, thanks.
MORGAN: Whoa! What the... What? What's all this?
ABDALLA: What's wrong? Muddy boots?
MORGAN: Something's leaking. Bloody hell!
ABDALLA: Careful! Is it chemicals? Whoa! Right...
MORGAN: What is it?
ABDALLA: I don't know. Wait... I don't know.
(She suddenly sinks up to her neck.)
MORGAN: What the hell? Okay. No, no. Hold on to me.
ABDALLA: I can't. I can't!
(She disappears under the liquid.)
MORGAN: Jesus! Right. We need help! We need help!
(In the field tent, the soldiers sit up as the radio makes a noise.)
MORGAN: We...
(Then he disappears under the liquid too, a few bubbles then still as the Homo Aqua hangs there like a crucifix. Then another being
leaps out of the liquid and recovers the body. Alarms sound in the tent and everyone moves out.)
PIERCE: What's happened?
MACKIE: You have to decontaminate, sir.
PIERCE: But tell me what's happening.
MACKIE: I'm sorry, sir. You'll be able to see once you...
PIERCE: Captain, tell me what's happened!
MACKIE: They've gone, sir.
PIERCE: What do you mean?
MACKIE: Everything's gone.
(They go through decontamination. The floor is solid again.)
PIERCE: Who was on duty?
CHAKRI: Corporal Morgan and Private Abdalla.
PIERCE: Then where are they? And where's that... thing?
CHAKRI: We were just seconds away. They can't have got far.
(Barclay pulls the metal frame Homo Aqua was on out of the ground.)
PIERCE: Hold on! Keep the area clear.
HASHIM: But they've stripped the place bare. Where did everything go? Who was on duty?
PIERCE: (radio) Corporal Morgan. Private Abdalla. Please report your location.
CHAKRI: We can search the village, sir.
PIERCE: Corporal Morgan. Private Abdalla. Please report. Corporal Morgan. Private Abdalla.
(Faint buzz of radio static.)
PIERCE: Corporal Morgan.
PIERCE [OC]: Corporal Morgan.
PIERCE: Private Abdallah.
PIERCE [OC]: Private Abdallah.
PIERCE: Please report your location.
PIERCE [OC]: Please report your location.
(Pierce lies on the floor.)
PIERCE: Corporal Morgan?
PIERCE [OC]: Corporal Morgan?
PIERCE: Private Abdallah.
PIERCE [OC]: Private Abdallah.
(Pierce and two others scrape away the top layer to reveal a hand.)
BARCLAY: What's that? Huh? What is that?
[Camp]
BARCLAY: He was 28.
PIERCE: I wanted to say sorry you had to see that.
BARCLAY: You got the wrong one.
PIERCE: That was your first death. I'm sorry.
BARCLAY: No. I'm here by mistake, okay? I haven't got clearance. I am grade ten. I work in transport. I'm a clerk.
You were meant to have Roger Trevithick, right? I've just ended up here by mistake. I shouldn't be here.
PIERCE: Are you saying you're here by accident?
BARCLAY: Yes, sir.
PIERCE: And that, I suspect, is how history is made. One great big chain of mistakes. But still, the UNIT protocol states,
at times of historical or cultural or political impact, a member of the civilian staff must stand alongside the military as witness.
And they could not be more civilian than you. Too late to turn back now, Barclay. Welcome aboard.
CHAKRI: Typical military intelligence. I got a First-Class degree and did intensive training at Saint Andrews for three years
to get here. You blundered in by mistake.
BARCLAY: Yeah. I'm the one who orders the cars and finds cheaper lorries. But I met the Doctor once.
CHAKRI: No way.
BARCLAY: Last year in the tower, he said hello and then he... then off he went.
CHAKRI: What was he like?
BARCLAY: Just like... He was vivid, you know? It was just this tiny little moment, but... I think about it every second of every day.
That creature, what was it?
CHAKRI: The Unified Intelligence Taskforce was created to deal with alien lifeforms, but... this species isn't alien. They're from Earth.
They were here before us.
BARCLAY: But... What, did they die out? What...?
CHAKRI: They hibernated, underground, and this was when the Earth was young cos the planet reformed around them and sealed them in.
Sometimes proof is found and we hide it.
BARCLAY: What for?
CHAKRI: Think about it. They were here first, millions of years ago, so the planet belongs to them. Technically, we inherited their world,
but if they're not dead... what if they want it back?
WOMAN: Positive sighting! Grid nine! We have a lifeform!
MAN: Let's go!
CHAKRI: Barclay, with me!
(They take position behind a barricade. Soldiers ready their weapons.)
BARCLAY: Here, what's that? What's that? What's that for?
(A video camera.)
CHAKRI: You're the civilian witness, you record everything. That could be our testimony if we get killed.
BARCLAY: If we get... If we get what?
(The screen shows a blue Homo Aqua with a spear standing in the water. This is a more streamlined version of the old sea devils.)
PIERCE: At my command, arms down.
MAN [OC]: All units, arms down.
PIERCE: How are we on translation?
[Science tent]
CHESNEY: Aligned and running. Three, two, one. Ready to calibrate, sir. As soon as it talks, we can capture the sound.
(At the shoreline, Homo Aqua emits what sounds like a continual shriek.)
CHESNEY: Running translation, sir. We are calibrated, sir. Ready to go.
[Camp]
PIERCE: My name is General Austin Pierce, and I represent the Unified Military Taskforce of the Combined Nations
of the Drylands of Earth, and I welcome you into diplomatic concord.
[Science tent]
CHESNEY: Concord is a big concept. Sorry, can we think of another word, please?
[Camp]
HASHIM: Meeting.
PIERCE: I welcome you into this diplomatic... meeting.
[Science tent]
(The translation come up on screen.)
MACKIE: You killed us.
[Camp]
BARCLAY: Oh, God. Oh, no.
PIERCE: You then took two lives. And now, I suggest we stop.
[Science tent / Camp]
MACKIE: Agreed.
PIERCE: I hope we can meet in peace...
MACKIE: Agreed.
PIERCE: ..and learn from each other.
MACKIE: Agreed.
[Camp]
PIERCE: And work to forge a friendship between the land and the sea.
BARCLAY: Is that agreed?
MACKIE [OC]: Agreed.
BARCLAY: Told ya.
[Science tent]
MACKIE: But... we do not... agree. Do not agree with... We would talk to all your animals.
CHESNEY: Humans.
MACKIE: Er, we would talk to all humanity. Er, no, sorry, sir, it's... it's not "would" in the conditional tense, sir, it's
we all talk. All. All of us.
MIN TSO: Oh, my God. It means all of them.
[Camp]
(There are more Homo Aqua visible.)
HASHIM: Repeat the declaration of peace.
PIERCE: Yeah, I know. I say again. We come in peace.
MACKIE [OC]: Agreed.
CHESNEY [OC]: No, no, no, hold on, sorry. We still haven't got the right translation.
[Science tent]
CHESNEY: "We all talk" is a layered statement. There's another concept embedded. Could he say it again, please?
MIN TSO: Don't refer to them as male.
[Camp]
PIERCE: I ask you to repeat your previous statement... for translation.
[Science tent]
CHESNEY: We are talking to the whole world.
MACKIE: We are talking to the whole world...right now. Present tense.
[Camp]
PIERCE: What do they mean? In what way?
(Every mobile phone lights up with a UNIT Emergency Override. Major incursion in progress. Steel Protocols. Immediate action.
All personnel report to home bases. Avoid water crossings. Rivers and waterways are now considered hostile territory.)
PIERCE: It's happening all over the world.
(Homo Aqua has emerged to watch as humanity reacts by getting into its cars and trying to drive away into traffic jams.)
BBC BROADCASTER: All over the world, humanity reacts to the simple fact that the species that came before us has woken up.
(Chinese state broadcaster reports as social media goes manic. A new landmass has emerged in Upper New York Bay that dwarfs Lady Liberty.)
TRINITY WELLS: ..and the President has called for a new age of cooperation. It's being called H2O Diplomacy.
[London]
(Unprecedentedly rapid building works are happening just upstream from the Houses of Parliament in London. A giant tube from
a building on the south bank into the Thames.)
TRINITY WELLS: The first official meeting with Homo Aqua will begin here, on the banks of the Thames, inside Imperial House.
Behind me, that's the construction that's being called the Waterway.
[Barbara's home]
TRINITY WELLS [TV]: It's a specific demand from Homo Aqua as a junction between the water and the land. Some say it's a symbol of peace.
BARCLAY: Okay, so I can't do the 17th or the 24th and I don't know yet about the 31st.
BARBARA: Bloody hell! You can't do that! That job of yours is useless. Kirby?
KIRBY: What?
BARBARA: Your dad said he can't come and get you for the next three weekends because he's not bothered.
BARCLAY: Is that a problem, Kirby?
KIRBY: No.
BARBARA: What about me? I've got plans.
BARCLAY: Yeah? So, anyway, I have just put 3,000 quid in your account. Hope that's okay.
BARBARA: What do you mean?
BARCLAY: Like I said.
BARBARA: You did not. Where's that from?
BARCLAY: Well, I got promoted, thank you, but apparently my job's useless.
BARBARA: Well, if I'm getting 3,000 pounds, how much did you get?
BARCLAY: Oh, that's nice.
BARBARA: Mmm hmm.
BARCLAY: Well, you can get some extra cooks in now, help with the business.
(Barbara gives a bowl of food to Kirby.)
KIRBY: Thank you.
BARBARA: Funny thing is, with these Sea Devils, it's got Kirby watching proper TV again like the old days.
KIRBY: Well, you can't say Sea Devils. They're called homospondyls. All right, don't laugh. Don't laugh because homo doesn't mean gay.
BARBARA: It does if you're my age.
BARCLAY: So Homo Aqua's Gay Water?
BARBARA: That's them, the Gay Waters!
BARCLAY: That's what you've been drinking, Kirby. Too much gay water.
KIRBY: Shut up!
BARBARA: So, what's this promotion, then? What are you doing?
BARCLAY: Er, it's just, you know... just more admin.
[Empress Hall]
(In Imperial House.)
CHAKRI: Come on, this way.
PIERCE: General Austin Pierce in Grid B2, Seat 1. Morning, everyone.
[Control room]
KATE: A very good morning to you, General Pierce, and to everyone. For the record and for history, my name is Kate Lethbridge-Stewart,
Commander-in-Chief of the Unified Intelligence Taskforce. UNIT has been chosen to lead these talks because we stand above
and outside all countries, borders, governments and oceans of the world. We represent humanity. But today, we represent all life on Earth.
And I hope this will be the start of a great endeavour to find peace between all of our kindred species. To begin the formal proceedings,
confirm Downing Street online. Good morning, Prime Minister.
[Cabinet Office Briefing Room A]
SHAW: Good morning, Kate. Extraordinary days. I spent a long time working hard to get the people's vote, now we've got new people.
[Control room]
KATE: White House online.
WH [OC]: Confirmed.
KATE: Hall of the People, Beijing.
HotP [OC]: Confirmed.
KATE: National Congress of Brazil.
NC [OC]: Confirmed.
IBRAHIM: We have all 195 nations, ma'am.
KATE: And do we have the Ambassador?
[Empress Hall]
PIERCE: Approaching now.
[Control room]
SHIRLEY: Apparently, he had the lobster thermidor last night, against our advice. Let's hope that's not a major crime down below.
KATE: Thank you, Mrs Bingham. Let's concentrate, eyes on the task.
[Empress Hall]
SHIRLEY [OC]: Pardon me, ma'am.
HYNES: Ah, General.
PIERCE: Good to see you, sir.
HYNES: Very special day.
PIERCE: Absolutely.
[Control room]
KATE: Mister St. Lewis, how's the Waterway? Are we ready to go?
[Outside Imperial House]
ST. LEWIS: Stress is holding. Seals checked and secure. A16 has been fixed.
[Control room]
ST. LEWIS [OC]: Though the only way to see if this works is to do it. You've got quite a crowd.
KATE: All under control.
SHIRLEY: Ma'am, we have a press drone.
KATE: Ready for that. Take them out.
(Sniper shoots, people gasp.)
[Empress Hall]
BARCLAY: What was that?
CHAKRI: Paparazzi drone.
BARCLAY: Did they see us?
CHAKRI: One-way glass. Didn't you read anything?
BARCLAY: My family don't know where I am. They'd flip!
TREVITHICK: Thanks to you, I'm not even allowed in this room! Very well done!
(And gets escorted out again.)
BARCLAY: I...That's Roger Trevithick.
SHIRLEY [OC]: Prepare tank activation.
[Control room]
KATE: Positions, and good luck to us all.
IBRAHIM: To confirm, the perimeter's now secure, ma'am. All stations at Gold Standard.
KATE: Thank you, if you could not interrupt. We have all comms focused and recording, backups online. Good, good. Mrs Bingham, let's begin.
SHIRLEY: Initiate tank activation. And flood the tank.
[Empress Hall]
SHIRLEY [OC]: Open seals one, two, three. Open seals four, five.
(Water is travelling along the tube.)
[Control room]
KATE: Take it up to 100 PSI.
SHIRLEY: Open seals six, seven, eight.
[Outside Imperial House]
MAN: Valve blown!
(Water gushes from one piece of the tube.)
[Control room]
SHIRLEY: Section 45 compromised.
COMPUTER: System compromised.
KATE: Emergency teams.
(The assembled dignitaries watch as the water sloshes around in the tank while a worker outside turns a valve wheel.)
COMPUTER: Void stable. Water filtered and purity at 98 percent.
KATE: 940,000 litres. Well done, Mrs Bingham.
SHIRLEY: Thank you, ma'am.
KATE: Now, are we ready? Let's welcome our guests. Open water lock one.
[Empress Hall]
PIERCE: Looks like we have six lifeforms.
[Control room]
KATE: And a seventh.
MIN TSO: Four Homospondyl Erectus, aka Homo Aqua. Two of an unknown lifeform. One of a second unknown. Three different lifeforms in total.
(All registering different colours on the screen.)
[Empress Hall]
PIERCE: General Pierce to all troops, red status. Confirm. Red status.
[Control room]
KATE: And here they come.
(Four Homo Aqua with spears form a guard.)
KATE: Two unknown lifeforms entering.
[Empress Hall]
(These are more fish-like with fins and sharp teeth, and take up a flanking guard position.)
CHAKRI: It's just...
[Control room]
KATE: What are we saying?
MIN TSO: I'd call them Piscimorpha Grandis.
HART: Welcome to Piscimorpha Grandis.
SHIRLEY: Does that mean Big Fish?
MIN TSO: Yup.
KATE: Focus, thank you.
(One of the Homo Aqua guards puts its hand on the tank glass.)
KATE: That's the signal for the airlock.
MIN TSO:Third life form approaching.
IBRAHIM: Ma'am, we don't know what that third lifeform is.
KATE: Then the first gambit is to trust them, Colonel. Open the doors.
COMPUTER: Activating airlock pumps. Airlock at full capacity. Decontamination in progress.
(The unknown and two guards are in the airlock as it drains. The beings enter the room.)
MIN TSO:I'd say Homomorpha Sapiens... or, to simplify, Homo Amphibian.
[Empress Hall]
(The unknown has a very human face.)
CHAKRI: Oh, amazing.
BARCLAY: They killed two of us, remember?
CHAKRI: We killed them. That's what this is for. To bring peace.
[Control room]
KATE: Ready with translations?
CHESNEY: Up and running, ready to go.
KATE: Sir Jonathan, good luck.
[Empress Hall]
HYNES: I, er, I bid you welcome on behalf of the human race. I stand here as, er...
SALT: We do not need translation.
[Control room]
CHESNEY: Did we learn their language? No, we did not.
KATE: Save the comments.
[Empress Hall]
HYNES: Well, your... your English is excellent.
(Salt speaks Russian.)
[Control room]
CHESNEY: That's... Russian.
[Empress Hall]
(Hynes is also fluent in Russian.)
PIERCE: Well played, old man.
HYNES: I bring you greetings from the United Nations of this world that we call Earth. It's a symbolic title
of Indo-European origin that bears no disrespect to the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and waterways around us. And I bring you a gift.
Rhododendron nivale, the dwarf snow rhododendron. A flower that grows at the highest point on planet Earth, on the slopes of Mount Everest,
four miles above sea level, perhaps never seen by your kind. Now, it carries a scent, er... ..or a flavour, an essence that
you will have never known before. Would you, er...?
(The glass dome is lifted from the tiny plant. Hynes and Salt breath deeply.)
HYNES: This is given with respect and the hope of peace between our species.
SALT: We have a gift for you. My children.
(Two squelchy bundles are dropped onto the floor.)
SALT: My children should have been born at the turn of the Third Cold Current. But they choked on your oil. And poison. And excrement.
[Control room]
SHIRLEY: Skip to 16!
KATE: Sir Jonathan, go to 16, paragraph 10.
[Empress Hall]
HYNES: I must state with vigour that we recognise the problem. Our solutions are remarkable...
SALT: We do not know you.
HYNES: Well, I... I am Ambassador... Sir Jonathan Hynes...
SALT: You are not known to us. We would speak... with him.
BARCLAY: Me?
[Control room]
KATE: Who the hell is he?
MACKIE: Well, he's... nothing. He's no one. He... he's part of the team. He's the witness.
IBRAHIM: He's the mistake. He was there by mistake!
KATE: Give me intel on him, now!
MACKIE: Yes, ma'am. Right away, ma'am.
[Empress Hall]
BARCLAY: No! Sorry. No, no. You... you've got the wrong man.
SALT: You showed respect. ,
(Salt touches their neck pearl and show Barclay crossing himself in front of the dead Homo Aqua.)
BARCLAY: Er... No, that's just a... that's just a thing.
SALT: You respected our fallen kin when no others did.
[Control room]
KATE: What are they, Christians now? Someone tell me what's going on.
[Empress Hall]
BARCLAY: I'm not even religious. I don't know why I did it.
SALT: But we saw your kindness. And we see you. Will you stand as Ambassador, and talk on behalf of the entire human race?
BARCLAY: (squeaks) Okay.
